The MAPS Program: To Hope or Not TO HOPE?

Is it possible that the brain can repair itself naturally despite the majority of therapists from the mainstream medical world saying that it cannot?

Claudie Gordon-Pomares, a researcher in brain development, spent her life finding ways to make fundamental neuroscience findings useful and applicable in the home, where real life happens.

While the brain's precise mechanics are not fully understood, there is plenty that we know that can help people affected be neurological dysfunctions.

For example, did you know that your brain dopamine levels will double if you only smell something you like deeply? Do you realize how this can help children who have difficulty controlling their movement, or children who struggle to maintain focus for more than an few seconds because their brains have a dopamine problem?

Back in the 1950’s when many of the world’s top scientists were trying to find a cure for polio, a brilliant young doctor was the one who came up with the cure. This so shocked the higher ups within the medical community around the world that even though the young doctor was seen as hero by millions of people everywhere, he was quietly despised by older researchers who had struggled for years to find the cure for polio but were unsuccessful.

We are not here to convince anyone, because we cannot. We side-stepped the mainstream validation processes in many ways. The MAPS protocols do not involve any intake of any compound whatsoever, only the presenting to the brain of specific pleasurable experiences. It is not possible to make the brain do something it does not want to do and have negative outcomes by presenting information to the brain in a natural way.

So far, we have accumulated more than 100 progress charts of children and adults who have made the kind of progress that none else could have achieved. This is our anecdotal evidence. We invite any research team to check and double-check these graphs and any supporting data they would like us to provide.

Now, ask yourselves this question, because eventually money will be involved if you choose to pursue MAPS as an option for your loved one:

If this program works for your loved one, what value would you place to have the tools to enable your loved one to live a productive and happy life?

What is our success rate?

Theory says that all brains can repair themselves completely.
In the real world, especially in western society, the environment has a way to make it difficult.

The brain was made to develop inside the womb, where it does not yet have to worry about protecting itself and the rest of the body. All it has to do is grow, help the rest of the body do its job, without having to worry about where it will find food, where it will find shelter and warmth or where it will find oxygen.

MAPS is a method of presenting the kind of experiences to the brain "outside of the womb" that will make it want to grow at a higher rate than it is used to.

We have found that to make it possible for the brain of anyone to grow, and repair itself in the process, it is vital to reproduce as closely as humanly possible the same kind of comfortable and stress-free environment that we know is conducive to brain development.

This is how we calculate our success rate:

How to make MAPS work
FOR YOUR LOVED ONE

Here is how it is possible to create the kind of environment conducive to brain growth and brain repair. This list is not exhaustive and is presented in no particular order.

  • Expressing affection in as many ways and as many times as you can imagine;
  • Respecting the person's ownership of his/her own body;
  • Preparing a space for a pleasant, relaxing and quiet MAPS session;
  • Respecting the person's need for increased down time while the brain is working hard at growing and re-arranging the way it is working;
  • Ensuring that all the MAPS sessions are warm and comfortable experiences;
  • Ensuring that all activities organized around/with the person are only as challenging as the person is ready to participate in them;
  • Ensuring that all interactions with other persons are only as demanding as the person is ready to participate in them;
  • Did we say that love was a big factor?
  • Ensuring that the pace of activities at home is kept as low as possible by all family members;
  • Understanding that trying is what counts, regardless of the apparent outcome;
  • Understanding that this is a natural, progressive process;
  • Understanding that everybody is different and needs different levels of attention.
Do you think
you have what it takes?

The only way to really know is to give it a try with sample exercises that we would give you.

We give families whom we feel would be good candidates for the MAPS program the opportunity to try this at home for two weeks, free of charge.

It gives us a chance to verify that:

  • not only we were correct in believing that you can create the kind of environment in which the brain can relax, grow and repair itself;
  • but also that we can work together as a team for the benefit of your loved one;
    • we will need you to report to us weekly in a detailed, quantitative way;
    • we will need you to attend phone appointments every two weeks;
    • we will need you to be able to creatively create a fun learning atmosphere around each new game we give you to do with your loved one.
Do you think
you have what it takes
to do it for 4 years?

Most cases only require 1.5 years or less to see most symptoms removed, but it has taken longer in more complex cases.

However long the program needs to take, we need you to be faithful and consistent 365 days every year. Having said that, we understand human nature and will only ask you to commit to this 6 months at a time and will allow you to take a small break from the rigorous routine of reporting and doing MAPS.

Everybody is different. No two program looks alike. The MAPS program works best when it is tailored to each individual.

How to make it impossible
to work

Here is how it is possible to curtail brain growth and make MAPS ineffective. This list is not exhaustive and is presented in no particular order.

  • Any form of physical abuse (physical punishment, sexual abuse, withdrawal of essential foods or warmth);
  • Any form of emotional abuse (emotional blackmailing, name-calling, derogatory comments);
  • Challenging mental capacities with no time to adapt to and/or integrate the stimuli presented;
  • Withholding expressions of affection;
  • Failing to prepare the person emotionally and make him/her comfortable for the MAPS session (remember that the brain must want to get better);
  • Making the MAPS session a boring and/or unwanted routine;
  • Failing to prepare the space for a pleasant, relaxing, quiet MAPS session;
  • Introducing compounds into the body that would stress the body and the brain chemically;
  • Demanding stressful physical performance from a weak and unprepared body (repeating such demands leads to sustained toxic levels of blood cortisol which has catastrophic long terms effects);
  • Stretching muscles beyond the body's true ability to cope with pain (Check the heart beat rate, not for an outward expression of pain);
  • Invading a person's personal space (the mouth, in particular, is very personal);
  • Too many repetitions of the same tasks;
  • Expecting too much performance too early, before other necessary milestones must be reached, and before the necessary tools must be built or repaired in the brain.
  • Sustained stress is known to:
    • Deplete brain Serotonin levels;
    • Lead to a diminished hippocampus.
    • Lead to liver failure, diabetes type 2, renal failure, stunted growth.

The MAPS program (Monitored Multi-cortical Activities for Additional Pathways and Synapses) is a stress-free method of enriching your loved one's environment in a way that prompts the brain to grow and repair itself in the process.

It only takes 10-15 minutes each day to implement the treatment procedures twice daily, thus leaving you plenty of time and energy to share and enjoy life.

Normal brains interact with the environment, in order to adapt to the changes in the environment and in order to maintain their functions at an optimal level. Dysfunctional brains cannot do that because they translate incorrectly inputs from the environment.

MAPS consists in providing dysfunctional brains with carefully designed experiences that will help them re-arrange the way they are working in order to achieve optimal levels of function, just a like a typical brain would.

The activities are designed to trigger the brain's natural self-repair processes. Most of the time we use the god-given five senses (well, there are truly seven that we know of) to activate and associate specific brain zones, which is why some people call this brain mapping.

The key is pleasure and NO STRESS whatsoever. The brain will respond very quickly to pleasure and will do a lot of work to seek to repeat the experience, unless it is barraged with other types of challenges.

For example, did you know that smelling something you enjoy boosts your dopamine level by 100% and that if you associate that with another pleasurable sensory activity, you can double that figure? The olfactory bulb, the dopamine production centre in the brain, is connected to many parts of the brain, but it's only 3 years ago that they were able to demonstrate in peer-reviewed journals that the olfactory bulb can migrate nerve cells to neighbouring lobes and provide full recover there.

We believe that the whole brain is plastic. There are more stem cells in the brain than in every other part of the body combined. We believe that this is how the brain is able to respond so well to our program

For hundreds of children and adults who had mental disorders and have graduated from the MAPS treatment program, the world is no longer frightening, but has become a familiar, comfortable and engaging environment in which learning is a pleasure, life is fun, affection is reciprocated.

Families say it best when they say that they can finally do "what regular families do".

Age is irrelevant with brain plasticity. It doesn't matter if the person is 5 years old, or 35 years old. The adult mammalian brain is plastic. Only with very old age does it become more difficult to grow new cells.

While the theory says that the brain can repair everything, there are ways to make the MAPS treatment program not work, by interfering with the brain growth that happens for 3-5 hours after each 10-minute MAPS session. The brain grows when it is at rest.
